Ways To Holiness

In Matthew 5:48, Jesus said you must be perfect just as my Father in Heaven is perfect. Do you think Jesus will say something that is impossible for us to achieve? Though this may seem like an unachievable task,Jesus said that what is impossible to men is possible to God. Below are a few ways we could improve the spiritual journey that will bring us closer to our Father.

1. Verbatim pray “Lord, give me all the necessary grace to be holy, and to help bring saints to heaven in my lifetime.”

Jesus said “Apart from me, you can do nothing.”Therefore this prayer is a plea to God to have Him bring this about.

In Western Christian theology, grace has been defined, not as a created substance of any kind, but as “the love and mercy given to us by God because God desires us to have it, not because of anything we have done to earn it.” St.Thomas Aquinas in his Summa Theologiae, states that grace can be given either to make the person receiving it pleasing to God (gratia gratum faciens)” so that the person is sanctified and justified or else to help the receiver lead someone else to God (gratia gratis data).

A saint, apart from someone who is canonized by the church, is also defined as a person who is very good, kind, or patient.

2. It maybe easy to give in to the temptation of sin since we are confident that God will always forgive us. However, even if God has forgiven us for our sins, I have realized that God will still give us punishment for our transgressions because God is just. The disobedience of Adam and Eve, a common sin, cost them to leave the Garden of Eden and inherited original sin for all future generations. This is how God deals with sinners because it discourages us not to give into temptation.

I remembered when I learned my father had an extra marital affair. My cousins consoled me and they said there is a curse in our family and that this is our fate. A priest later told my mother and sisters that if we forgive our father for his sins, the 7 generations before us will be forgiven for their sins, and the curse will stop for the next 7 generations after us. Jesus prayed for the forgiveness of the soldiers who were part of his Crucifixion because Jesus knew the soldiers will have to pay in another form for all the cruelty and injustice they did to him. So pray for those who did wrong to you, and have pity on them. Hating them will only blacken your heart and lead you further away from God.

Jesus did not stop Zacchaeus when he announced that he will return 4 fold to those he cheated. Will it be worth to sin if we have to pay more than 4 times?

3. Always seek God’s will. In Eph. 5:17 “So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is”. Knowing his will always bring you much closer to God especially during difficult moments in your life. God always has a very good answer for everything. He speaks to us in different ways: in events that happen, in your thoughts, reading the Bible, through another person, etc. Jesus said “Seek and you shall find.”

Pray: “Lord give me all necessary grace to always easily understand your will whenever I seek it.”

4. Be humble and Christ-centered. In John 13:37-38 Peter said to him, “Master, why can not I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock will not crow before you deny me three times.” In Scriptures “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

I have witnessed coaches, players and trainers boasting that they will win. In the end, most of them fail. Do not speak with finality lest you eat your words in the end. In my experience, if I say I will be there at a definite time, it never happens. However, if I add “hopefully,” I get there on time.
In humility, one acknowledges the power God plays in our lives. Also, in any praise you receive, always respond in a Christ-centered manner: “Thank you Lord”.

5. Matthew 19:16-21 Now someone approached him and said, Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life? He answered him, Why do you ask me concerning what is good? There is only One who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments. He asked him, Which ones?” And Jesus replied, You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother; and you shall love your neighbor as yourself. The young man said to him, All of these I have observed. What do I still lack? Jesus said to him, If you wish to be PERFECT, go, sell what you have and give to [the] poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

I initially thought that the happiest thing in life is when one accepts Jesus in one’s life. I later discovered that serving him is even so much better. One finds the true joy that all of us seek.

Whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of

heaven. Matthew 5:18
